What Does OPPO Think Of "Drift Missiles" Being Banned At Ebisu??

I think it was the right thing to do, maybe now people will be more careful with their cars, or they might take their “missiles” to the street.. It also seemed unsafe as hell.

It was cool seeing these beat up cars the first time and the second time too, but then it struck a nerve. These guys were destroying chassis that held high demand in the drift community and were quickly becoming scarce through age alone, so the more I saw it happening the more it seemed wrong. And that’s before you even start thinking about safety.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

Its about time this decision was made, you wouldn’t be allowed to do it in any other professional race series so why should drifting be any different. It’ll hopefully preserve a few more cars that we’re being eyed up as missiles.

I’m pretty damn sure this has something to do with the drift car accident that occured recently and got national news coverage all over japan (yeah nothing really ever happens here so...). Basically a drift car lost a wheel and that wheel ended up hitting a spectator who got badly banged up. In typical japanese news coverage way, they heavily overdid it and that brought people to be “scared” of drifting... sucks..

That was on Nikko circuit...

I find there is a beauty within beaters. Just mandate cages and a tech inspection. Let the beaters be.

Senna died so no one else can so now everyone’s immortal, no need to reproduce so now everyone’s (nonexistent) kids will be gay. What’s hard to understand about that?

That’s kinda what they’re doing. If it takes a hit, they’re saying it needs to be repaired to an acceptable standard before going back out. That’s fine.

If the chassis is straight and there’s a cage that’s still safe, I say why not keep running?

I don’t mind that all cars aren’t straight and shiny, but destroying cars on purpose isn’t nice. I can understand track owners not liking people driving so that they don’t mind hitting stuff on the track.

But I don’t see much relation to the mentioned accident as it did not have much to do with drift missiles. You can loose a wheel from any car if parts fail or something isn’t properly torqued. But after this kind of accidents, safety things are often reviewed.

“acceptable standard” is the tricky part though. This has to have pass/fail criteria that cannot be judge subjectively.

My guess is that if you’re shedding body panels on track with each lap because you’re not making any effort to repair it, you’re a hazard to other drivers and the track itself. Even worse if we’re tslking about suspension/steering components. Yeah, you may be safe in your cage, but the track doesn’t want the hassle of fixing busted barriers you took out as you wrecked your “disposable” practice car.

That’s true, and will be hard to implement fairly. It’s easy for autocross when it’s 1) throttle doesn’t stick, 2) wheels won’t fall off, and 3) not leaking fluid.

Pretty much yeah basic things. As long as the car is safe for the driver and parts aren’t falling off, have at it.

While I understand the ban..

it’s kinda a bad thing because of the nature of drifting..you will eventually dent up the car. So what we are supposed to use super clean S chassis to drift now?

They should just up the regulations on these drift sluts.

I don’t get it, going to a track is supposed to be an environment where you can drive a car that wouldn’t be able to drive on the road, no windows, no headlights, no taillights, a few gnarly dents? Who cares. Drifting is dangerous, period. But as long as the frame of the car is still structurally sound, then why not keep drifting? It’s not useful for anything else.

I did see a car at Ebisu I think it was a Toyota sedan, on Instgram that looked like it had been t-boned by a truck, that thing was straight up dangerous.

Stopping people from intentionally crashing, destroying cars, endangering other people who just want to drive at the event, and littering the track with debris sounds like a good idea to me.

I get the feeling like (given the rules aren’t given in the article, I would have to read them) that the judges are going to use it as a grey area blanket excuse to kick out anyone who seems to be engaging in the “missle” behavior. I am also fine with that, since compliance is easy. Don’t crash and you won’t be kicked out of the event.

Nothing wrong with a rough looking car, they’re bound to get beat up as you learn the sport, but it needs to be prepared to an acceptable standard. I think perhaps the term “missile” is misused, the cars in question are just beaters with half-ass preparation. Do they have any form of tech inspection? Even our most basic autocrosses have a tech line where in inspector looks around, checks safety equipment, and kicks the tires.

Kinja'd!!! Hateful Mate > Invinciblejets

Kinja'd!!!0

That’s not really the point. It’s just that many of theese missiles are way to rough. A loose bootlid will fly quite far, when it finally lets go after being smashed into a wall 200 times. There’s a difference between missiles that are beaten to death, and a dented but repaired, and structurally sound practice car. Some of these missiles have exposed fuel tanks, no cage, and have been rolled before. Quarter panels that are 2 feet missaligned, with all welds torn are just unsafe. With the increased tourist driver traffic to Ebisu, I totally get why they try to limit the risk. Reign it in a bit, and make it safer for everyone.

It’s not just Ebisu trying to tone down the bashcars though. Driftland are doing the same thing, trying to end all the beaten to death e36's leaving parts and broken glass everywhere. With drifting growing as a sport, comes the importance of maintaining a more acceptable image in public. And as much as some prefer drifting to stick to it’s roots with missiles and “streeto” , the roots sort of depend on when people joined. Missiles are a fairly recent thing, really. As there was an abundance of drift prepped cars that had seen a few hits, and though they had life left in them, wheren’t really worth repairing, having them as practise cars would have seemed a good idea. But these days, you see videos of people buying perfectly fine cars to destroy, wallbanging at Ebisu. That’s why it’s starting to take the piss. Instead of trying to keep a dented car alive as long as possible, people are now deliberately hitting the wall hard. If you watch Noriyaro’s videos, notice how that dented skyline has lasted him 5 years, and still it’s only really been hit semi hard at one corner. That car, I recon is fine. Yes, it’s rough, but it’s no wreck. That’s the difference. Crashing is part of drifting, as you’re allways trying to push the boudries, but the demo-derby tendencies from the last couple of years have gone a bit far. At least in my eyes. If i can ever afford an Ebisu Holliday, I’d be quite happy knowing there’s a little less risk of being hit by a flying fueltank, liberated from it’s dented restraints, somewhere within a wreck of an Aristo.

KEEP DRIFTING FUN

I dunno, seems overly tight. What is a drift missile anyway? Do cars need to have all windows? Must they have every panel? Must they be dent-free? Must they have perfect paint?

Look at 24 Hours of Lemons. Every car is a missile, they’re all beater pieces of crap. But they go through inspection to make sure they’re safe, because everyone knows that if someone burns to death due to no kill switch/fire extinguisher, the event gets cancelled.

But that’s all it takes: inspect the basics, let the rest be free.
